Answer: It not so noisy that I notice it, but it does make a noise like any external HDD with spinning disks and head read/writes. It is more noisy while spinning up and down; less when it is up and running. If noise is a high concern, you probably should be looking at an SSD. -

The G-Drive external hard drive is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and works right out of the box with Mac. It is not solid state, but it can handle running 24/7 like a NAS. The 4TB version is not very noisy, but there may be some noise when it spins up and down. However, several customers have reported reliability issues, with some drives failing after only one year of use. One customer reports that the G-Drive has a new technology using helium in one of the compartments to achieve greater capacity, which can make data recovery challenging. Another customer reports that the drive randomly disconnects, and causes issues with the computer, and another reports that the volume failed and wouldn't reformat.
