Answer: We just use a cast iron frying pan. Works great. -

How does it perform using pellets rather than chips for smoke?
Answer: It will not do very well. The chip bowl is not really a bowl so your pellets will either pour out or ignite. I actually had issues with chips igniting anyways so bought a cast iron skillet to hold them instead of the one that comes with the smoker and it works a lot better.
